Zoals we eerder meldden was opper B&S’ Stuart Murdoch al een tijdje bezig – lees: 5 jaar – met het schrijven en opnemen van een soundtrack bij de musicalfilm God Help The Girl. Een film die in 2010 gedraaid zal worden en waarvoor hij ook het script schreef.
Bij het woord musicalfilm krijgen we toch lichtelijk rillingen, maar het gaat hier natuurlijk wel om een Belle & Sebastian productie dus wellicht valt het mee. De bijbehorende soundtrack is alvast redelijk op tijd klaar en zal 22 juni uitgebracht worden.
Het idee voor de film/soundtrack ontstond toen Belle & Sebastian op tournee waren in 2004. Stuart Murdoch zegt hierover: “All the time I was touring with Belle and Sebastian, I was putting aside songs for certain characters and at one point I realised, that it would make sense to string them together to form the backbone of a musical narrative”. Vervolgens organiseerde hij een wedstrijd voor onbekend talent via Imeem en selecteerde daaruit Brittany Stallings en Dina Bankole. Catherine Ireton werd aan het lijstje zangeressen toegevoegd plus natuurlijk de B&S bandleden, Neil Hannon, Gary Olsen (van Ladybug Transistor), Asya (van teenband Smoosh) en het Zweedse Those Dancing Days.
Het album zal behalve nieuwe nummers ook het oude “Act Of The Apostle” en “Funny Little Frog” bevatten maar dan in een nieuw jasje gestoken gezongen door de ‘nieuwe’ dames.
